My 10-Minute Meditation Tryout
Alright folks, saw this “Best 10 Minute Meditation for Beginners” thing floating around and figured, why not? Been feeling like a wound-up spring lately. Needed to try something stupid simple to just chill out.
Here’s how it went down, step by step, no sugar coating:
Getting Started Was Awkward
First off, finding a spot. My living room’s usually a disaster zone. Kicked some laundry under the couch and plopped down cross-legged on the carpet. Told myself “10 minutes, just sit still.” Yeah, easier said than done.
Closed my eyes. Felt weird. Instantly started thinking about the weird engine noise my car made this morning. Great start.
The Actual Techniques – Keeping It Simple
The guide basically said to do two things:
- Focus on breathing. Like, really notice it going in and out. At first I was breathing like I was trying to inflate a mattress. Super loud and unnatural. Took me a good minute to stop forcing it and just let it happen. Mostly felt the air going in through my nose – kinda cool and dry.
- Count the breaths. Simple, right? “In… One. Out… Two.” Got to three before my brain went rogue: “Did I pay the electric bill?” Had to restart. Must’ve started over about seven times. Seriously annoying. Felt like herding cats in my head.
The Middle Bit – Not Exactly Blissful
My leg started buzzing around minute five. Pure pins and needles. Almost gave up right there. Decided to just… let it tingle? Weirdly, the intense “OMG I HAVE TO MOVE” feeling faded after a bit. Still uncomfortable, but not panic-inducing. Progress?
Thoughts kept barging in. That annoying email I needed to reply to. What to make for dinner. The neighbour’s dog barking again. Every time I caught myself drifting, I just mumbled “Okay, back to the breath.” Felt like a broken record, but it worked. Sorta.
Wrapping It Up (Finally!)
Heard the timer chime. Honestly? Didn’t feel some magical wave of calm wash over me. Opened my eyes expecting nirvana, got… carpet fuzz.
BUT. My shoulders weren’t up around my ears anymore. That tight knot between my eyebrows? Slightly less knotted. Felt a little lighter, maybe? Like the noise in my head turned down from “screaming match” to “busy coffee shop.”
So, Was It Worth It?
Yeah, actually. It wasn’t perfect. My mind wandered, my leg went numb, and I didn’t achieve enlightenment. But for 10 minutes of just sitting there trying to notice my breath? It did something. Felt less frazzled than when I started. Simple? Yep. Easy? Not really at first. Felt like practicing a skill, kind of clumsy. But hey, nobody builds Rome in ten minutes. Gonna try it again tomorrow – maybe the cat won’t pick then to start hacking up a hairball.
